What happens when AVIF becomes AVIF

Source format

AVIF can use lossy or lossless compression and supports transparency and high bit depth.

Target format

AVIF can use lossy or lossless compression and supports transparency and high bit depth.

What changes

The file is decoded and written as a fresh AVIF file. For JPEG to JPG, the image encoding is the same and the practical change is the extension.

Duration and audible content are preserved, subject to decoder support and any settings you change.

Metadata may be rewritten, and re-encoding with changed settings can alter quality even when the extension stays the same.

Inspect the output before replacing the source, especially when the formats use different layout, codec, or editing models.

Password protection, corruption, missing fonts, macros, embedded objects, and unusually complex layouts can change or prevent conversion.

Conversion steps

  1. Upload a AVIF file no larger than 1 GB.
  2. Confirm that AVIF is selected as the target.
  3. Download the AVIF file and check the result before deleting your source.

Troubleshooting

The AVIF file is rejected or will not open.
Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
The AVIF file is larger than expected.
Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.

Privacy and file retention

Uploads and converted files are processed automatically and irreversibly deleted within 24 hours. You can delete them sooner with the delete control. Convertr does not read, mine, sell, or manually review file contents.
